A visit to my Big Dad

Hi Big Deb,      Why don't you plan to take mom home between 11/26 and 11/28. DROP HER OFF AND COME SPEND THE NIGHT WITH US AND GO BACK THE NEXT DAY.

Ok Big Dad here is an email explaining the deal with the dates over
Thanksgiving.

Scott and Erin will be driving here from State College on Friday,
November 19th and staying until Monday evening, November 22nd.

I will drive to York on Tuesday, November 23rd to get Mom to bring her
back down here for Thanksgiving.  I can either do the drive to
York/back to Richmond all on Tuesday or I can drive to see you on
Tuesday and pick Mom up Wednesday and drive back to Richmond on
Wednesday.

Then I will have to bring Mom back to York from Richmond sometime
between Friday, November 26th and Sunday, November 28th.  Again, I
could do the drive all in one day or I could drop her off, then come
see you and drive back the following day.

I think traffic-wise on I-95, it would probably be better if I saw you
sometime between November 26th and November 28th if that works for
you.  I would also be open to driving back to Richmond on Monday,
November 29th if I had to.

So do you want to talk to Kathy and see what day would be good to
visit?  And let me know if it would be possible to spend the night.
I'm thinking that I would get on the road really early the following
day to try to beat the holiday traffic.

Love you and wish you the best with these tests.  Your oldest ugliest :)

Just an email

Hi Miss Erin

That was not one of the nicest e-mails I have ever received, that was THEE NICEST e-mail I ever received. You are some kind of Granddaughter.  I love you too !!!!!

Yes, I am feeling great and am glad all the treatments are behind me.  I will probably get a CT scan in November to make sure that I'm still in remission. They will do this every 3 month for awhile, than go to 6 month, than each year.  And yes , assuming everything goes OK, we plan to put our house up for sale this coming April and IF we can sell it we will move to Myrtle Beach.

Enough about me, I am so glad to hear you love the main campus. Keep up the good work with your classes. Remember, this is the beginning of the rest of your life, so make the best of it. Hope you have a great ski season.

Thanks again for the wonderful e-mail.

                                                                                Love ya,  Grandpa

2010 Ride for Jim Yorktown Finale Ride

Here is a summary of the 90 cyclists’ efforts in the Ride for Jim Yorktown Finale cycling event...

I can tell you that my Dad and Howard’s brother David, both who are dealing with lung cancer, were greatly touched by the love, care and concern of family members and the community. I will make the best of any cycling event but riding for a cause that hits so close to home is especially inspiring. And being able to celebrate Howard Smith’s finale ride across the US with him was so much fun! My little team, the Big Wheels, started out with just me as the sole member :). During the ride I was joined by Howard (Anderson), Carl and Kendra – my dear friends from my Bike Virginia tours, Jennifer – a new friend who joined my weekly Thursday night ride for the Richmond cycling club and who was doing her first long ride, and Mark Popp – brother of Jim Popp for whom the Ride for Jim is all about. It was a real honor to have Mark join us. He drove up from the Jacksonville, FL area to do the ride and was very happy to have a group of people to ride and talk with.

We were so fortunate with the weather. While it was quite hot and humid we had Pittsburgh-like cloud cover the whole way from Richmond to Yorktown, which made the ride so much easier. We rode primarily on the historic Scenic Byway Route 5. Route 5 parallels the north bank of the James River, has many historic plantations along the way, and is beautifully canopied by trees. We lunched in Colonial Williamsburg, always a treat! From Williamsburg to Yorktown we were on the Colonial Parkway, 14 miles of cobblestone road, which made the last part of the ride the most uncomfortable :). But it was well worth it. The post-ride festivities were awesome celebrating with Jack Haar and Howard Smith. Howard did a celebratory ride into the York River with cannonball blast from a Tall Ship in the distance.

All in all, it was a glorious day. Thank you again for your well wishes and support!

Dad's Health Update

Hi Gang,
I met with Dr. Zaman today to review the CT scan I had last Wed.
The results are great. The massive tumor that I had on my right side is GONE. Yes completely GONE. This is unbelieveable. The only thing left are two small area's which are "active" but Dr. Zaman doesn't appear to be too concerned about them. However I will continue my series of treatments, as outlined in my earlier e-mail, through mid-july.
I will continue to be tired after my chemo treatments and could become more tired as the treatments continue as this is part of the process. However, I am on the road to recovery and this is what we all wanted. Thanks to the power of prayer and POSITIVE thinking.
Love you all and if you have any questions let me know.

Dad's Health Update

Hi Gang,
Here is this weeks update based on my visits to my Heart Doctor and my chemo treatments.
I went to see my Heart Doctor today for my six month office visit. Dr. Smith checked my pacemaker and how it performed over the past six month and everything was fine.
However the pacemaker is now 6 1/2 years old and the battery has run out of steam. It was onlt suppost to last 5 years. So Dr Smith is setting up a date in mid June to replace the present pacemker with a new one. One more operation to look forward to, but it has to be done and I knew it.
I had my second chemo treatment today and will have the third one tomorrow. Again they are going great. I will see Dr Zaman next Thursday, 5/27, to review the treatments and my white blood cell count and at that time he will set up a date in the first week in June for my CT scan which is what I have been waiting for---AMEN.
So early June is the CT scan and mid June is my pacemaker replacement.
I think that brings you up to date. Any questions let me know.
Love you all, Dad

Dad's Health Update

Hi Gang,
After talking with the Doctor and Nurses this week I'm going to try to give you an idea what my present cancer program consists of. In doing this I will not "dot" all the "i's" or "cross" all the "t's" but will try to make it as simple as possible.
First of all I will go thru 3 Series of chemo treatment. Each series will consist of 3 chemo treatment. My first series was completed on 4/6 thru 4/8. My 2nd series is being done this week, 4/26 thru 4/28. Assuming everything goes OK my third series will be done from 5/17 thru 5/19.
Before and after each series of tests they take a blood test. This shows them my white cell count before the treatment and the cell count after the treatments. Chemo kills the bad cancer cells but it also kills some good cells. Based on the cell count after the treatment they give me a shot in the arm to try to re-adjust to the proper count.
After the 3rd series in May they will give me a CT Scan to determine if the cancer has gone into remission or is there still "active" areas. IF there are still "active" areas I will probably go thru 3 more Series of treatment which would take me into early July for the next CT Scan.
IF the CT SCan shows the cancer has gone into remission than they will stop treatment until they repeat a CT Scan in 3 to 6 months. How great would that be.
IF the CT Scan shows remission in May that would mean Kathy and I could sell the house asap and move to Myrtle beach, which is what i would want to do. Otherwise we will be looking at late July /August.
I would get all future treatments in Myrtle.
I hope this help you all understand the program a little better but should you have any question just e-mail or pick up the phone. This may not be 100% correct but it's close enough.
Love you all, Dad

Dad's Health Update

Another GREAT day at chemo. Everything went fine and I'm having no reaction to the treatment at all. Keep our fingers crossed. They said I'm doing so well that, if I want, I can drive myself to my session tomorrow.
Tomorrow will be another 3 hr. session than i'll be off treatment for 3 weeks.

Dad's Health Update

Hi Kids,
First session of chemo is over and it went GREAT. It was a 4 hr. session and will be followed by a 3 hr. session both tomorrow and Thur. All you do is sit in a lounge chair and read or watch TV while the chemo is put in your blood stream.
When I was done, I got up, walked out and drove home. Hope they all go as well. They have a great Nurses crew that you work with and they are already giving me a bad time
Love, Dad.

re: Duke

I did stay up for the whole game. It was over at about 11:30. Go Duke !!!!!!

Dad's Health Update

Hi Gang,
Just got back from my visit with Dr. Zaman. Not the best news that I had hoped for.
I have Stage 4 cancer pretty much through out my body. It is not curable but very treatable. I will start a very agressive chemo treatment starting tomorrow. I will take chemo for three days in a row and than will wait for 21 days for the next series of treatments.
All I need from all of you are good possitive thoughts.
Love you all, Dad

Dad's Health Update

Hi again kids,
Well I went to see my cancer Doctor, Dr. Zaman, yesterday to find out what's going on. First of all I like Dr. Zaman very much and I think he will call a spade a spade.
He looked at the Lab tests on the lump Dr. Brown removed and wasn't satisfied so he sent the " lump" out for further tests. At this point he's not sure if I have Lymphoma cancer or he believes it may be lung cancer. He will get the lab tests back at the end of this week and I will see him again next Wed., 3/31, at 11:45 AM.
In the meantime I will be taking a PET scan on Friday to give Dr. Zaman more info. The CT scan shows cancer on the right side of my chest only and the Bone scan showed no signs of cancer at all.
Some of you asked how I feel. I am no Hero and I am scared to death.
Love you all, Dad

Dad's First Health Update

Hi Kids,
Just want to give you an update on my health.
I was operated on this morning to remove a lump on the right side of my chest. The result of the operation showed that the lump was cancerous. They do not know what type of cancer it is until they get the results back from the lab which will probably be some time next week.
In the meantime I will be starting tests tomorrow. I will be going in for a ct scan tomorrow morning from my head to my feet to see if there are any signs of cancer any where else in my body. They will also do a bone scan to check for bone cancer. I will see a cancer Doctor next week to find out the results of these tests.
In the meantime all I can do is hope for the best. I'm sure everything will work out OK.
Love you, Dad
